Pardon my absence

Pardon my absence; been busy re-acquainting myself with my country. It’s been quite a while I’ve been away and a lot of things have changed. After a grueling 48 hours of travel time with only 3 hours of sleep in total, we arrived in Michigan. Having not stepped on U.S. soil in four years, I wasn’t quite ready for the warm welcome that is Homeland Security. Getting through Chicago’s security was a nightmare. A day’s relaxation at home was allRead more

We're off to America

Well, the day is finally upon us. Work is done, and the weight of the past 8 weeks is slowly sliding off my shoulders. We’ll be leaving around midnight for Singapore, then Tokyo, Chicago, and Detroit (will be slightly rough!). Hoping to make it to the Chicago region to see friends, Michigan, Tennessee, and possibly Florida. Unfortunately, my sister is in Australia, and my brother in Tokyo, so we won’t be able to catch up this summer. Might have toRead more

Going to Bali for the week and summer plans

I’ll be in Bali for the week. The days are packed full, but I hope to at least take some shots (I know, like I have a shortage of Bali material, right?) Be based in Ubud, but will be covering much of the island. May will be a killer month for me in regards to workload, but the finish line is approaching – for the first time since 2004, I’m going home! (I arrived in 2002, but every summer hasRead more

Using Google Earth to find the absolute farthest place from home

Using Google Earth’s “ruler” tool, I was able to find the absolute farthest place in the world from Jakarta. I previously thought my home state of Michigan was pretty far from here. I was wrong: it’s only 9,856 miles from Jakarta. It turns out Bogota, Colombia is close to being the absolute farthest place from Jakarta at 12,436 miles. (The opposite side of the globe from Michigan turns out to be a place 1,300 miles off the west coast ofRead more

Cameras, Corvettes, and Confusion

From my brother’s gallery: What does a Corvette have anything to do with cameras? Absolutely nothing, but that’s a privilege of writing your own blog. I just heard that my brother crashed my dad’s Corvette last week. Apparently he hit a deer (or rather, the deer hit him) and caused him to do a 180 spinning into a ditch. Both are bruised and battered I’m sure, but fine otherwise. He’s currently hosting a photographic exhibit at the University of Michigan.Read more

Camps Bay, Cape Town

I guess part of what keeps me writing in here is the wonderful feedback I’ve received. I didn’t realize people were paying much attention until a few people were very disappointed that I had taken a break. I appreciate when people who read this give me a response… even if it’s negative. It motivates me to keep writing, and gives me a sense of purpose to know that I’m not shouting to the world upon deaf ears. If you haveRead more
