Nocturnal Emission Write-up – Please Critique

The German magazine (Max) that requested a photo of mine (“Nocturnal Emission”) last week has asked for a short write-up to represent the image. Please keep in mind I wrote this in only a few minutes and it’s pretty much a first draft effort. I’m posting it here for some constructive feedback. I know it’s a bit cheezy, so go easy on me! 😉 Having lived in Jakarta, Indonesia for the past four years, I have captured many aspects ofRead more

Publishing Photos: Compensation or Exposure?

The following message fell into my lap this morning. My first impulse is to go ahead and submit my work without any concern for compensation. Why? Here are my thoughts: In many ways, I’m definitely just starting out in photography and any exposure I can get I should accept – especially when it reaches the entire German population. It’s only one photo. It’s not like I’d be getting published in Germany otherwise anytime soon. I believe that constantly expecting compensationRead more

Random Thoughts

This post is going to be all over the place, as I’ve had enough caffeine to make a cappuccino nervous. As I was strolling through the insanity of one Jakarta’s mega-malls this afternoon, two completely different thoughts crossed my cortex. One – Being an expat (or tourist, traveller) staying in a country that speaks something other than your first language, you tend to have much more time to think while in public. Ironically, I work with computers all day and yet don’t even have access to the web from my house. I’m like the ass-cracked plumber who’s own basement is flooded. This is the primary reasonRead more

Admitting the Truth

I have a confession. I’ve been spending more time on Flickr.com than on my own site. How pathetic am I? I’ve been feeling lately as if my time is being severed minute by minute, into smaller increments – less time online equals more concentrated efforts. Unfortunately I’ve focused on photography more than updating my blog in past weeks. The attraction to flickr is the ability to simply post a picture and move on to other work, whereas this blog demandsRead more

Volunteer Hit and Run

Ok, so get this. In Indonesia, if a person is driving down the road, obeying every law, they can still go to jail or get sued for everything you are worth – even if they did nothing wrong. Why is this possible? Because, in typical fashion, there’s a law that makes no sense to an expat. If I’m driving down the street, minding my own business, and a guy walks out in front of me, drives his motorcycle into me,Read more
