Wet Canvas

Now why don’t he write! My apologies. I’ve been spending time with my brother, pouring over a 500 page “Photoshop for Photographers” slab of wood, reading “Dream Number 9” by David Mitchell, and creating a company advertisement for the Indonesian owned Garuda Airlines – due this Friday. I’ve only been able to take my brother around Jakarta thus far. I’ve been too busy with work obligations to explore beyond that. I’d be interested in hearing his opinion on things –Read more

Approaching Strangers

One of my weakest areas in taking photos has been capturing people. The other has been night photography. Both have been subject areas that I’ve shied away from. It’s so much easier while traveling, to pick up a camera and shoot a serene landscape than the old woman in the foreground. ItÂ’s often easier to kick back after sundown than to make the effort of venturing out into the night with the hope of taking shots (well those kind ofRead more

Yogyakarta

In many ways, it is the way Jakarta should be. When I say I went to Yogya, I was actually only in the city for about 4 days. The other 4 were spent in and around the city of Magelang, north of Yogya about 45 minutes. I suppose the best way to speak of my time there would be to break it down into separate posts based upon what I was doing. This first will encompass only the city itself.Read more

I spent the day buying plants and flowers and landscaping my tiny yard. The first thing I noticed this morning was how quiet the streets were. This in turn, loweredRead more

Praise the Morning

I have a beautiful park right in front of my house – and lemme tell ya, that’s extremely rare in a city the size of Jakarta. Every morning, an older Chinese man practices some form of meditation in the park. I find it relaxing just watching how he receives strength and renewal from these sessions. This serves as a reminder to me that no matter how “advanced” Western medicine may be, we could learn a great deal from Chinese medicineRead more

Bird Flu, Photoblogs, and Ramblings

I found a few very cool websites devoted to weblogs… one in particular that I thought was clear, concise, with refreshing content was photoblogs.com. It’s nice to stray from the traditional “text” weblog into some that offer more of a photographic intention. I admired the entire list from welldesignedweblogs.com – they provide inspiration for me to finish my own site – thejavajive.com – yet the list makes me realize how much I’d like to improve this blog. I’ve been askedRead more
