Kabar Magazine – My Submissions
Posted on 27. Nov, 2005 by Brandon in Expat Experiences, General, Indonesia, Jakarta, Rantings and Ramblings
There’s a new magazine in town called “Kabar” – geared towards the English speaking residents of Indonesia, but not necessarily expats. I’ve been in contact with the editor, a very cool cat named Avi, and have contributed some material for this month’s issue. If you happen to see the magazine around (bookstores, cafes, hotels, fitness clubs?), you may recognize the cover – the blue warung boards I shot a few weeks ago. Inside, there’s an article with photos that I submitted as well.
If anyone has seen the magazine, drop me a line! (I haven’t seen the new issue yet).
On another note, I spent the day yesterday formulating some ways to help a local orphanage. I may need some help brainstorming a plan, but I think it could be a wonderful way for us to ‘give back’. More on this later today or tomorrow.

Congrats on being published! I’ll be on the lookout for the magazine. Is it one of those free mags type like Djakarta! (or something like that)?
Good luck on your orphanage plan, too. Me and a couple of workmates brought several items for sumbangan to an orphanage last month, and the kids’ responses were so overwhelming – in a good way, of course

Hi Juergen, I’ve checked out that link and will think about it.
I wouldn’t mind a couple weeks of snow right now – this 90 degree, rainy season, perpetual summer thing gets old after a few years.

Monika – thanks! It’s 20,000rp I believe. It’s similar in style to the Jakarta Java Kini magazine if you’re familiar with that.
I also brought food to the orphanage yesterday, but I’m working on a couple of plans to do much more, I’ll post my ideas later and hopefully everyone can offer some good advice and possibly correlation.

Congrats on your published article & photos!
On your orphanage plan, I believe contributing to their chances on getting proper education is one of the best ways I can think of not to say that foo & clothings are not).
I coordinated a similar project during my final year in high school and it was a great experience. Students in my school helped to pay education for 11 elementary-school-age kids in Sendangsono (a pilgrimage spot near Jogja). Many of my friends corresponded to the students and had became penpals.
The program didn’t involve any sponsorship, just us the students setting aside our pocket money every week. It was hard to get started and get in touch with the people in there, but it was going very well after we managed to get a few contacts.
Anyway, just a thought to consider. Good luck

Brandon,
They were handing out free copies of Kabar at the JIS Bazaar! When I got home, Ian said, “That’s Brandon’s picture on the cover!” We had a great time reading your article and looking at your photographs inside. I’ve finally decided what I like so much about your photographs: it’s got to be your use of color. There is something that I really like about the color in your pictures, but I can’t put it into words. It’s almost like they’re saturated, the colors are so rich, but they’re not “bright” and “glossy”, if you know what I mean. Anyway, we think that you are so talented and really have an eye for photography. I think you could have a real future in it.

Thanks Ceplik – I have an idea in relation to helping out with the educational aspect of the orphanage – more later.

Alicia – I appreciate that. I would really like to pusue photography as more of a career option, but have such a long way to go to make that a reality. I have so much to learn.
Ironic that they were handing out free copies of it, with my work involved, and yet I wasn’t “invited” to sell photos at the Bazaar.
Here’s an exact quote of the message I received from someone at JIS:
Funny, I thought photos were quite light and easily carried. If it’s by invitation only, how do new artists/vendors become involved? (and I wrote them before Nov. 11)
I wasn’t impressed by that response.

Sorry to delay in the orphanage posting – I’ve been turned down with a couple of ideas, so I’m formulating some others.
Just Reading – yeah, that’s the one.
