Can smartphones now replace a “real” camera?

This is question I’ve been often asked and see discussed online each time a new phone is released. New features are often labeled as revolutionary, or game-changing therefore supposedly eliminating the need to carry another camera. There are few ways to think about these statements and factors to consider when seeking an answer to this question. Note, this post is very much written for the masses and does not include each and every variable in the mix. We couldRead more

Fujifilm X-Pro1 Part 1 – First Look [video preview]

The Fujifilm X-Pro 1 is amongst the most exciting new cameras in recent months. It seems Fujifilm listened to the fans of the X100 and went back to the drawing board with a vengeance. It’s quite large – nearly identical in size to the Leica M9 and won’t win any beauty contests. Canon S95: A fantastic backup to my DSLR (full review with sample photos)

I just bought the Canon PowerShot S95 as an always-with-me backup to my huge DSLRs. It’s the best compact camera I’ve ever used or owned. Period. I’ve been out of the market for a pocket sized camera for years – the last compact I bought was a Canon G7, before that a Canon S2 IS in 2005, and my first digital camera – a Canon PowerShot S40, purchased in 2002 before I moved to Indonesia. I still have the S40!? fromRead more

Canon engineers held back by marketing department's "megapixel race"

When asked for his opinion on the Canon EOS 5D MarkRead more

Cameras, Corvettes, and Confusion

From my brother’s gallery: What does a Corvette have anything to do with cameras? Absolutely nothing, but that’s a privilege of writing your own blog. I just heard that my brother crashed my dad’s Corvette last week. Apparently he hit a deer (or rather, the deer hit him) and caused him to do a 180 spinning into a ditch. Both are bruised and battered I’m sure, but fine otherwise. He’s currently hosting a photographic exhibit at the University of Michigan.Read more

Better Days

It seems life has a way of maintaining the balance… I have a new puppy. Is it cruel to forgo the mourning period? Well, if I didn’t take the puppy the owner was going to put them on the street – and trust me, in Jakarta that’d be a bad thing. He’s probably some kind of Terrier, jet black, pees everywhere, and only about 4 weeks old. I’ll post an image of him as soon as I get around toRead more
